We all know how important it is to track our crop’s performance over the season.

The Field monitoring diaries page provides a view of all the diaries that have been submitted by your teams, letting you monitor the progress of your crops in the field.

Monitoring diaries are submitted via the mobile app but may be viewed and edited on the web.

Adding a field monitoring diary

This is only possible on mobile.

We've now added another way of entering field monitoring diaries from the mobile app map page. This saves you having to manually type in the owner and field name, and allows you to confirm visually that you are selecting the right field and crop.

Go to the map page in the app and simply tap the "My location" icon in the bottom left hand corner to find your location. Your location will show as a blue dot and will follow your position. You will need to ensure you have location settings enabled in your phone's app settings.

If you are near a field or plot, they will show on the map. Tap on the crop and the plot card will load. Note that we have also added the field name to the plot card for extra confirmation. Swipe up on the plot card and you will see you now have the option to create a field monitoring diary.

This will take you to the diary creation page, with all the field details pre-populated so you don't have to add them. You will still be able to add field monitoring diaries from the homepage of the app or by tapping on the Field monitoring icon or on the '+' icon at the bottom of the page.

To add a monitoring diary without using the plot card you will need to do the first step of the following before moving to step 2. If using the plot card you can move straight to step 2.

1. Select a plot from the search list. You can either submit field monitoring diary entries for fields with a plot set up in Inventories, or create a new field which will become an off platform lot. Off platform lots will not appear on the map but will still appear in Field Inventories.

2. Select the date of the diary entry; this will default to today's date as standard.

3. Enter the Primary growth stage; the options for this will depend on the crop that is set up in the plot.

4. A secondary growth stage may be added but is not compulsory.
5. Observations. These observations can be selected from the drop-down lists. This will then bring up a list of variables in the search bar for that observation.

6. You will then either be prompted to enter a Value or a risk level of Low/Medium/High based on your observations. Multiple observations may be taken in one field monitoring diary.

7. Additional notes may be taken for your reference later.

8. Finally, there is the option to upload up to 5 images of the crop, either from your phone's camera or from the its gallery.

9. Once you have filled in as much information as possible, you will need to tap on save. You can go back to any diary later, either on mobile or on the web to view or edit it.

Below is the field monitoring page from the web app, showing you a list of diaries that have been recorded. This is accessed from Monitor > Field Monitoring:

To find the diary you are interested in, you can filter by

  • Date range

  • Reporter

  • Team

  • Farm

  • Field

  • Crop

  • Variety

  • Plot

  • Observation Variable

  • Risk Level

When you click on any diary entry, you can view the data that has been recorded, such as growth stages, observations, and crop images as shown below:

This helps you monitor the crop progress, yield estimation, disease/defects, harvest date estimation and more!  Two key features of observations include:

  • Variable | Each observation will have a variable and the recorded value.

  • Crop images | The crop monitoring diary map shows the exact location that the image was taken, as shown below:

  • If one image is taken, the pin will be for that image's geolocation

  • If multiple images are taken, a co-ordinated pin for each image geolocation will show

  • If no image is taken, the geolocation at the time of field monitoring diary submission will be shown

Visibility rules

A Field Monitoring diary will be visible to you if:

  • Your organisation created the diary
  • You own the plot
  • The diary was created by the owning organisation of a plot that is shared with your organisation
  • None of the above, but in networks, your organisation has been allowed “diary visibility” by the diary creator

Field monitoring does exactly what it says; it helps track your crop’s progress in the field. This gives you an extra pair of eyes on the ground and helps you make important decisions later in the season.
